For all of the beautiful artwork aboard Independence of the Seas comes quite a bit of inspiration.  For instance, the art work throughout the main stairs port side is an inspiration of the Impressionists.  One loves Impressionist works for their beauty and luscious colour, but the fact that they were often painted outdoors, that the treatment of light often resulted in indistinct form, and that there is more than one way to see an image are just some reason the Impressionists' beliefs still reverberate continue to influence today.

The inspiration of work throughout the main stairs starboard side is that of Expressionism.  The term has shown to be very fitting for the development of the art scene throughout the twentieth century, evolving into the Abstract Expressionists - a term for the influential postwar movement also named The New York School, which was the first specifically American movement to achieve worldwide significance.

Artwork throughout the forward stairs port side is that of the Southern Masters.  Harmony and glowing colour were prized during the Renaissance, while Baroque art is characterized by great drama, rich deep colour, and intense light and dark shadows.  Baroque art was meant to evoke emotion and passion instead of the calm rationality that had been prized during the Renaissance.

Finally, the forward staircase starboard side features artwork of the Dutch Masters.  Artists active during this time usually developed a style within distinct categories: Historical painting, Portraiture, Landscape and cityscape, still life, and Genre paintin or scenes of everyday life.

As art inspired as is Independence of the Seas, she is also numbers driven.  Her conception involved nine different architecture and design firms, more than 100 artists, and about 4,000 shipyard workers and subcontractors.  She is also technology.  As quoted by STX Europe AS' President (formerly Aker Yards) Juha Heikinheimo, "Independence of the Seas is an evidence of that Aker Yards is continuously delivering in schedule large cruise vessels which are state of the art regarding both design and functionality".
