Nieuw
Amsterdam's introduction into the Holland America Line fleet with
much anticipation after her sister ship, Eurodam, has been such a
success. The Signature Class brought exciting, new concepts to the
Holland America Line brand. Two of such new options include
Tamarind and the Silk Den.
The Nieuw Amsterdam was handed over to Holland America Line on 30
July, 2010 in Marghera, Italy by Fincantieri Shipyard. Nieuw
Amsterdam departed the shipyard in Marghera on 3 July, 2010 and
arrived to the passenger terminal in Venice, Italy late in the day.
As part of the dedication festivities, one captain from each of Holland
America Line's ships went to Venice to participate and arrived at the
ship in a flotilla via vaporetto. They all played a part in the
inauguration of the Nieuw Amsterdam on 4 July, 2010 in the
Showroom at Sea when Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima of the
Netherlands christened the ship.
Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima was the first to sign Nieuw
Amsterdam's signature 'wall' that all guests who took part in the
inaugural voyage also signed. The guests on the inaugural voyage
signed the wall throughout the day on 6 July, 2010 while the Nieuw
Amsterdam was at sea from Dubrovnik, Croatia toward Venice.
Before signing the wall, all guests also had the opportunity to walk
across the Lido Deck amidships pool via a bridge and bless the ship's
bell with a glass of champagne. The final two guests to bless the
ship's bell were Holland America Line Mariner Society Ambassadors Leo
and Kathy Falkensammer as part of the official blessing of the bell
ceremony.
Nieuw Amsterdam is a contemporary evolution of the Holland
America Line that Mariner Society guests have come to love. Art
work throughout Nieuw Amsterdam is a nod to New York City which
is known as Nieuw Amsterdam to its Dutch founders. Holland
America Line worked with VFD Architects of the Netherlands and Yran
& Storbraaten architects of Norway to create art to complement Nieuw
Amsterdam's interior design.
Nieuw Amsterdam pursued a series of voyages throughout the
Mediterranean upon her inauguration and returns the following year after
a Winter season pursuing cruises throughout the Caribbean from Fort
Lauderdale, Florida. |
