Veendam
is the fourth Holland America Line ship to bear the name.
The name Veendam arises from the capital of the 'veen' colonies
in the province of Groningen in the north of Holland. 'Veen' is
the Dutch word for peat. Veendam used to be surrounded by
settlements where people lived in peat houses and they would form the
peat into bricks and build houses from it.
Like all Holland America Line ships, she was designed with the intent
for World wide cruising and hosts a spectacular array of art and pieces
from history.
Reminiscent of the Veendam III, Veendam IV returns to
Bermuda service in 2010 departing from New York City. Rich with
tradition, art, and history, Veendam takes her guests around the
World with modern amenities. |
