The
Crow's Nest Lounge, with a capacity for 250 guests, is an expansive
observation lounge with impressive views by day and then the ship's
nightclub by evening. A plasma screen overlooks the dance floor
and runs a series of videos or snapshots of various World destinations
or just graphic effects to complement the music selection.
The Crow's Nest Lounge on the Veendam is divided into separate,
distinct areas. According to designer F.C.J. Dingemans, "It's
a unique area from a design point of view" and "the room is at
the top of the ship, with a beautiful view, all around. And at
5,100 square feet, it's such a large room, we decided to take the
opportunity to create different atmospheres within that one space. |

Although
this three areas in one concept was new upon Veendam's launch,
the Crow's Nest Lounge has been a tradition on Holland America Line
ships for years starting on the Nieuw Amsterdam in 1983.
According to Dingemans, "each part of the room will be
distinct. On the starboard side is what I call the Captain's Area,
that has the feel of an English club. On the other side there is a
Tea Area, a space that's very light and airy. In the evening, the
central section becomes the Disco, with a dance floor, a bar, a disc
jockey booth and a bandstand - you have live music at night. But
always, we remember that the view outside is still the major part."
In a circular case located in the starboard aft section of the Crow's
Nest is a variety of Dutch pieces of history from the 17th through 20th
centuries. Included in these works are a ship model from the Dutch
State Yacht, a commemorative bronze medal depicting Admiral Michiel de
Ruyter, a bronze salute canon, a wine glass with wheel engraving, a
V.O.C wine bottle, a brass equinoctial dial, and the top of a gilt lime
wooden mast.
Located aft on Sports Deck are a basketball court as well as a
volleyball / tennis court.
